An article in the local paper caught my eye today. The headline screamed that vegans (people who do not consume any animal products) were putting their unborn children at risk of development deficiencies resulting from a lack of Vitamin B12 and/or folic acid in the mother.
The article was slanted to suggest that these potential deficiencies are the exclusive domain of vegans. This is foolishness. Anyone can have a Vitamin B12 and/or folic acid deficiency. It occurs in people who *do* consume animal products (the typical sources for Vitamin B 12 and folic acid), as much as for those non animal consuming vegans. Often it is a case of mal-absorption of Vitamin B12 and folic acid, due to digestive issues.
A wise precaution would be to have your Vitamin B12 and folic acid levels checked out, especially if you are pregnant. If supplementation is required a liquid or injectable form would ensure absorption.
I found co-creatinghealth.com to be very informative. Looks like the authour of the article has good knowledge of the subject. co-creatinghealth.com keep it that way.
