Milkweed: The New Defense Against Skin Cancer?

May 27th, 2009

Every year, the earth’s temperature is rising to some degree that we see new cases of skin cancer – to its deadliest form.  In UK alone, people with malignant melanoma have already crossed beyond the 10,000 margin, according to the Cancer Research, UK.

On top of these, there are people who want a quick tan and would go beyond what is considered safe and normal just to achieve that perfect barbie look. Doctors are very much concerned about people who bask under the sun, or sunbeds, for a very long time – since there’s a real danger of getting burned.

Melanoma skin cancers happen when one is over-exposed to the harmful UV rays, especially between 11 am to 4 pm.  But you can also get the bad dose in your sunbed.  What you thought was a mole can get bigger, change shape, become painful, or worse – bleed.  When you spot some changes on your skin, get yourself checked.  Early detection always means early prevention. Most common places for these troublesome spots to occur are on the back for men, and on the legs for women.

Some people say there’s nothing to fear, as long as one is shielded with a slop of sunscreen.  It doesn’t mean though that you only apply it once.  Be SPF wise.  Choose a sunscreen beyond 15 SPF, and always reapply.

Another woes of sunscreen are – parabens, which can lead to more cell damage with prolonged use.  It is always good to choose organic, natural, and safe.  The clock is ticking and we can only look for the most unlikely source for our skin:  MILKWEED.

These plants are the only source of food for monarch butterfly caterpillars. These are harvested to make dental floss and other hypoallergenic materials. Unknown to many, the oil of this plant makes a perfect sunscreen.  You only have to agree with the findings of ARS, or the Agricultural Research Service.

Imagine a sunscreen based with milkweed oil.  It doesn’t only contain skin moisturizers, but good antioxidants to keep your skin healthy.  You will also be protected from a wide spectrum of UV rays.   On top of it, it’s hypo-allergenic as well.

We can only wait for more news to come on this humble plant. For now, take cover under the shade and use only the most natural products to nourish your skin.

LOVE YOUR SKIN… Naturally..
