Breaking the Conventions

December 9th, 2009

Many times we’ve been told what’s good and what’s bad when it comes to our health. We know for sure that anything synthetic causes harm and those that are natural are our bodies’ best ally in natural healing. Yet, there are just exceptions to the rule that certainly raises one’s eyebrow as it defies what we conventionally know. You might be surprised that a little of a bad thing can indeed be good for the body.

This is in reference to the article written by Victoria Lambert in Mail Online. She had given a curious sharing that may indeed make sense. Overall, these unconventional ways have one thing in common: Moderation. It’s an old adage that goes ” too much of a good thing can be bad.. ” and vice versa. The only question one can ask is if it’s truly wrong to indulge in something one had been raised to believe is wrong. Then, every now and then, you hear some people getting the ill effects of something that was supposed to be good since they have abused their bodies and went overboard in doing what started as a healthy regime.

Here are the Top Ten Bad Things that Can Be Good for Your Health:

1. Anger

We know that anger can raise one’s high blood pressure and too much of it can be fatal, but a little anger will never hurt once in a while. In fact, a dash of anger can help you de-stress yourself and release all those feelings bottled up inside. This feeling of release can be great for your mental health as well.

2. Playing Video Games

There are video games out there that moves the participants into action, making them lose calories while having fun as well. It’s not just a matter of stretching your thumbs and fingers, but games like Wii and Tekken 3 can be a nice form of interactive gaming, with the health benefits.

3. Swearing

All those B’s and F’s can make one’s skin cringe, and it may be a sign of someone’s lack of proper breeding, but swearing can be healthy in increasing aggression levels which can reduce one’s sensitivity to emotional pain. Although it may affect the other person receiving all these swearing, yet swearing just helps a person deal with tough situations that can be damaging to his or her morale and mental health. Just don’t do it blatantly and be sensitive as well with other people’s feelings.

4. Getting Lazy

There’s nothing wrong in taking a day off, wasting time in doing nothing. In fact, lazing about is a natural reaction to fight off occupational stress, or those brought upon by work. Studies show that zoo animals who don’t move around a lot tend to live longer in captivity, than those who run free in the wild. Being lazy can be a means of self preservation as your body recuperates to face the challenges of another day. It can be addictive so discipline yourself and don’t do it often.

5. Stress

Many of people’s illnesses come from stress which can deplete your immune system of antibodies to fight off infections and diseases. But studies have found out that stressful events can boost your mental skills, making you learn and memorize more. The hormone called Cortisol boosts the brain’s learning abilities when one is stressed. This perhaps is the reason why students seem to do well in school when they’re cramming to make it to a deadline. A little bit of stress may not be bad after all.

6. Not Doing House works

Those who skip doing house works are blessed to be safe from allergies and other auto immune disorders due to exposure to harmful, chemical household cleaning products. These products can affect a woman’s hormonal conditions in the long run, making her future children at risk of having asthma. Chemicals in these household products are found to irritate a child’s respiratory system.

7. Listening to Loud Music

Loud music can damage your auditory perceptions, but studies have found that pumping up the volume of your home amplifier can be good for your brain. An inner part of the ear called the Sacculus responds to these beats, making one feel pleasure. This is why there is just a euphoria of crowd feeling happy in any concert we see on TV. Listening everyday to bad music can be truly bad for your ears, but a little bit won’t be bad, specially when you’re just feeling down and blue.

8. Fidgeting

You may have all those extra annoying habits like yawning, tapping, twitching, stretching, but these small activities can add an extra 350 calories burned a day. This is great news for those in the struggle against obesity.

9. Untidiness

There are just some people who are too lazy to make their beds after they woke up. There is always something more important to do. This may come as a blessing in disguise since an average bed carries around 1.5 million dust mites, feeding on dead human skin. These dust mites can be bad for people with asthma and allergies. When you sleep in a bed, you retain your moisture on it and keeping your bed unmade will make these mites linger longer, so they can soon run out of these moisture, dehydrate, and die.

10. Playing Bingo

This game may just be the cure to depression, where one can be social as well as be happy while playing the game of chance. Though gambling can be addictive, a few weekend fun can never do anyone any harm.

These ten habits and activities may not be your traditional way to finding healing, yet, one can learn from the virtue these bad stuff brings. A little bit of something may not be bad after all, which is better than finding your solace in synthetic ways of getting your healing. Be Good!
