Hyperthermia, or most commonly known as Heat Stroke, happens when the body’s temperature rises way above the normal level. This can accompany physical or neurological symptoms. Heat stroke, unlike heat cramps or exhaustion, is a serious medical emergency that needs immediate attention. When a person suffers from it, his or her vital organs can shut down – which can lead to death.

Summer is a favorite time of the year and the same time when heat stroke occurrence is high. Because of extreme heat and high humidity, the human body can only take such beating. When a person suffers heat stroke, the body’s temperature can rise up to 106 F or more. Dehydration is also another cause of heat stroke. Infants, the elderly, athletes, and those who stay outdoors for a long period of time are most likely to be at risk.

Symptoms of Heat Stroke

Headache
Weakness
Fatigue
Nausea or Vomiting
Dizziness
Rapid or Difficult Breathing
Confused Behavior
Disorientation
Seizure
Coma

How Can You Prevent Heat Stroke Naturally?

1. Move the person to a cooler place, if possible, in places with fan, shade, or air-conditioning.

2. Remove the person’s clothing and wipe him/her with a wet cloth. You may also place the person in a tub full of cool water ( NOT ice-cold water ).

3. Let the person drink cool, not ice-cold, water. You may put a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar that will act like electrolytes in your usual sports drink.

4. Let the person drink raspberry or peppermint tea which has a natural cooling effect on an overheated body.

5. To avoid dehydration, make sure you drink plenty of water or fluids everyday and avoid those with alcohol or caffeine.

6. Make sure your home is properly ventilated and allow open windows to help cool, natural air to come in.

7. If you’re outside, stay under the shade as much as possible, or protect yourself with a hat, hand fan, an umbrella — or by wearing light-colored clothes.

8. If you can grab a couple of green mango, eat this fruit to help you cool down.

9. Apply the essence of peppermint oil to your skin to help you cool down. You may dab a small amount on your temples as well.

Summer is definitely meant for fun and you need to get more than an ounce of prevention to make sure you won’t have to dial 911. Love your fruits, greens, and keep yourself hydrated. These healthy choices will save you from a fatal consequence which can be avoided in the first place. Have Fun!
