When you stand in front of a mirror, you’ll most likely see a lot of things – about you. There’s more to your reflection than the usual beauty-conscious self staring back at you. In Chinese traditional medicine, your very face is the window to your health – from your forehead, nose, chin, to cheeks. Each of these zones doesn’t only represent your T-zones, but it goes all the way through your body… and into your vital organs. There is surely a way for you to decode the message that your face is telling you. What seems to be an annoying zit can mean something more.

Our body’s organs, tissues, and cells are all connected. What afflicts one shall have a negative impact on another. Not a lot of people realize that what’s happening to the face can be more than skin deep. The ancient Chinese medicine have mastered this art of reading the body’s very language with thousands of years of practice. By harnessing the five elements of nature, namely earth, wind, water, metal, and wood, the Chinese have simply taken visual cues on what’s happening within.

How Do You Read Your Face?

As long as you have a good pair of eyes and a mirror, you can always do a self-inspection. This will help you know if you have minor problems that can become major health issues in the future.

1. NOSE

Your nose is said to be linked with your lungs. If you have long and thin nostrils, you might have lesser lung power and stamina. This means you will have to exercise more and practice deep breathing techniques. A pimple on your nose, with veins showing, may be an indication of high blood pressure, heart disease, or liver disorder. Clefts can also be a sign of problems with the heart and blood circulation. Sneezing dispels excess alkaline in the body.

2. FOREHEAD

Not only the seat of wisdom and the soul, but your forehead can tell you more about your heart and small intestines. If veins are showing on your temples, you may be at risk for heart or gall bladder disease. Skin discoloration can also be a sign of emotional stress. It is even believed that you can predict a heart attack by looking at the color of the forehead. You’re in for a big trouble if it’s bluish-green.

3. CHEEKS

The right cheek represents the lungs/ large intestine and the left cheek the liver/ gall bladder area. Any blemish or discoloration may be a sign of lung or respiratory disease like asthma. Your left cheek also reveals your emotional turmoil, specially when it comes to anger and depression. This part of the face normally represents the nervous system. Any blemish or redness may be a sign of high blood pressure caused by negative emotions.

Even the color of your skin can signal a lot of health issues that you suffer from within. It is believed that greenish skin is a sign of liver disease and cancer. An orange or yellow patch shows too much intake of sweets and sugar. A white patch may mean liver or kidney disease. In the end, it is always best to choose your healthiest options in order for you to stay healthy for life. Make sure you get your yearly physical exam, live a healthier lifestyle, and never forget to consult your doctor if you think you are at risk for chronic diseases. Prevention is always better than… a cure!
