When Insomnia Means Being Ugly

My friend wants to get a chin-tuck to look the way she did ten years ago. She wanted to look
beautiful, there’s no doubt about it. The truth is – she is also having a problem with snoring. Is this
just a coincidence? In my quest for answers, I have searched how these two can be connected.
Having double chins can be more than just a beauty issue, and the causes are closer to your bedroom
than you would ever think.

It must be a stroke of luck when I happen to come across an article about sleeping disorders and
double chins. How likely is it that men with thick necks snore a lot? There is just this obvious
connection between sleep apnea and thick necks. As we age, the ability of our muscles to keep the
soft tissues in our throats diminishes, especially during sleep… mostly, when someone experiences
sleep deprivation. Although it is too early to assume that snoring causes those thick necks, the fact
that you lack the quality sleep you need is an urgent call for action.

Let’s start with something that everyone is talking about – Obesity. Experts are calling it the new
global epidemic, on top of the pandemics out there. It is understood that hormones affect the way we
sleep. For example, women who are nearing the menopause stage experience sleepless nights and
periods of insomnia because of the changes in their estrogen levels. After menopause, these same
women tend to snore more since progesterone levels are now higher than the estrogens. The result:
women begin to snore, gain weight, and get thicker necks.

There are many factors to obesity, but here’s something you may have never encountered before.
Two hormones, Leptin and Ghrelin, come into play in the way we eat our foods. The first one, Leptin,
tells you to stop eating when you feel full and satisfied. The second one, Ghrelin, just stimulates your
appetite. Have you ever experienced feeling so hungry with just a few hours of rest and sleep? For
whatever reason, when you lack quality sleep, this Leptin starts to fall and Ghrelin takes control. This
is why you feel like you haven’t eaten for a day, making you more vulnerable to food cravings – and all
that munching can result ultimately in weight gain.

Is it right to say that when you gain weight, you’ll have thicker neck that will make you snore? Men are
more susceptible to snoring as they grow older. Snoring doesn’t make you gain weight, but having
trouble sleeping does. This greatly affects the aging process, specially when older people don’t get to
enjoy and reach REM, or what we call as ‘deep sleep.’ For this reason, their hormones’ ability to
regenerate new cells just go haywire. It is like a chain reaction – only in reverse for the elderly. Since
their bodies are not reset, they still feel full and satisfied. This is the reason why malnutrition is
common among the older generation.

Another disease most often talked about is – Diabetes. Does it make you ugly? No. But if you are
single and ready to mingle, it’s a read flag for you! All those late night parties can wreak havoc to the
way your body processes your glucose levels properly. Or simply put it this way: High Blood Sugar.
When there’s excess sugar, it is stored as body fat, causing weight gain. Beauty may be more than
skin deep, but in most people’s minds, being fat is ugly. It is an ugly statement of negligence on your
part.

Have you ever felt stupid when you lack sleep? There can be so many names to call it, but it all
means the same thing – those moments when your mind feels like being sucked into a black hole, and
you can’t think or speak coherently. You can’t even focus on simple tasks and simple math. It is just
hard to learn all those new things. Worst, you can even begin to see and hear something that’s not
there. Your colleagues might probably think you’re drunk or someone who have just pop up an anti-
allergy pill. Maybe they think you’re being a grouch, or just gone mad. You might even be too sleepy
to notice all of these.

And what about feeling too emotional when you are sleep deprived? Insomnia doesn’t only give you
those puffy eyes, but they also make you feel like a mix of emotions – gone wrong. Sleep deprivation
have been linked to many cases of road rage and vehicular accidents. There are just many stories of
this harmless-looking guy, driving his car to work, who suddenly run wild on a shooting spree, just
because he wants to make it to his meeting on time. Have you ever been under the hot seat from
your cranky boss? Chances are – he or she might just be upset because of lack of sleep, and it has
really nothing to do with your work.

Having trouble sleeping can have many factors and it can make your skin look ugly. When you sleep,
your skin takes its time to renew itself. Your skin is the largest organ of your body. It is what people
around you see. If you don’t get a quality sleep, your skin will suddenly look older, like a dried prune.
Not to mention the fact that your skin is also exposed to the harmful rays of the sun, the free radicals
around us, and those nasty toxins in your skin care products. This is why the word “Beauty Sleep” is
invented. Like good sex, having adequate sleep means looking fresh, glowing, and young. It means
goodbye to wrinkles and fine lines.

Still unconvinced? You’ll only have to look at yourself in the mirror after a few days of sleep
deprivation to see for yourself. When you’re sleepless and restless, the world just feel and look – ugly.

If these don’t convince you you’re ugly when you don’t get enough sleep, think about how ugly you
feel when you’re tired and how ugly all the rest of the world looks to you. Do you like what you see?
